The character Green Beret "John Rambo" was created by Canadian writer David Morrell, and his story was translated to the screen, with Stallone playing the leading role on First Blood (1982), featuring Richard Crenna and Brian Dennehy. It was an unexpected hit and caused a lot of controversy because it addressed the Vietnam War, which was still fresh in Americans' minds. This film, in spite of its political views and its international appeal, became a huge hit. The sequel, Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), came out. This film received even more criticism due to its plotline that alleged American MIAs were held by the government of Vietnam. Some say that bad publicity isn't possible. "John Rambo"'s second installment made a lot of money for Stallone which made him one the most popular male actors of the 80s. Stallone was able to gain popularity and made Rocky Balboa his old sparring with partner. The actor returned to his ring to ensure American pride against the Soviet threat, a Russian-born boxer called Ivan Drago (played by curt Dolph Ludgren ) in Rocky IV (1985). The fifth installment of the series was quite controversial for "Rocky" enthusiasts, due to the fact that violence levels seemed excessive compared with previous "Rocky" films, and particularly in the brutal assault suffered in the hands of Apollo Creed, played by Carl Weathers, at the brutality of the "Siberian Express".
